On 11 May 2014, a group of community-spirited ladies are going to run the Glasgow Women’s 10K to raise funds for Home-Start Glasgow North West. By sponsoring them, you can help young children in difficult family circumstances get the best possible start in life. How does Home-Start help families? Here are a few examples...

Linda is a single mum who recently had twins. Her elderly parents live down south and she doesn't know many people in Glasgow. Her Home-Start volunteer visits her every week, helping her to get the twins into a good routine and taking the family out and about to local parent and toddler groups so that they can meet new people.

Denise has 4 children, one of whom has a disability. When Denise's sister relapses into drug addiction, Denise takes on kinship care of her 2-year-old niece. At the Home-Start family group Denise learns lots of fun activities she can use at home to help the children grow and develop through play. She also finds out about other sources of support in the community.

John and Nina fled to the UK from the Democratic Republic of Congo to seek asylum after their village was attacked in the civil war. Their eldest son was killed in the fighting, and they escaped with their two younger daughters. Nina is suffering from severe depression and rarely speaks. Their Home-Start volunteer comes over every Tuesday to provide a listening ear, and a Home-Start staff member uses video interaction guidance with Nina and the girls to help strengthen their relationship.

Here are some words from people who have had Home-Start support:

"Knowing that there was a place where I could come to if I was having a bad day and where I would be truly listened to provided me with a sense of security in raising my twin girls."

"Sometimes you feel lonely. Home-Start doesn’t let you feel lonely. You feel someone is there."

"I can now go with my daughter to museums by myself. There is no way I could have done that before Home-Start."
