The Guild of Benevolence originated from the Fund set up in 1912 by the Institute of Marine Engineers and the Daily Chronicle newspaper to help the families of the Engineer Officers of RMS TITANIC, all of whom perished when the ship sank. Today the Guild provides financial assistance to necessitous UK Marine Engineer Officers from both the Merchant and Royal Navies, as well as to members of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology. The Guild also assists the wives, husbands, widows, widowers, children and/or dependants of the above persons.

The Guild has published a booklet in 2012 to commemorate the sacrifice made by the engineers of the Titanic. Funds raised through the sales of this booklet will go to the Guild's Titanic Centenary Appeal which aims to raise £1 milllion. Copies of the booklet are available to purchase with a minimum donation of £10 + P&P. Call: + 44 (0)20 7382 2644; Email: guild@imarest.org; Visit: www.imarest.org/guild
