Last Autumn I went to Uganda as a volunteer with the charity Cricket Without Boundaries. (CWB) I described it as a once in a lifetime experience. Well I've decided to go back, so it will be at least twice in a lifetime.
CWB was founded 10 years ago and has become the world's leading cricket development and AIDS awareness charities. What is special about CWB is the way in which critically important health messages about how HIV can be avoided are woven into cricket coaching for schoolboys and girls, and their teachers.
You can read about last Autumn's trip, what we did and what we achieved, by visiiting http://cwbblogs.com/uganda2014/. There is also a link there to the main CWB website. This year we will be visiting three even less developed locations in the North of Uganda, where little cricket is played and where local populations have suffered terrible hardship as a result of recent wars, in particular at the hands of the Lord's Resistance Army. Levels of HIV infections are high, and there are signs that infection rates are again on the increase. The CWB approach provides an opportunity to combine taking cricket to a new area whilst communicating HIV/AIDS awareness that can have a profound influence on future infection rates by targeting those who are most at risk of both spreading and contracting this devastating disease.
I am raising money to fund kit provision and to support the retention of CWB 'ambassadors' who will continue CWB's work in this new region after our UK based team has returned. Having experienced the CWB approach I am convinced that it is hugely powerful tool in combatting the scourge of HIV/AIDS. Please give what you can to this unique cause.
To raise funds we will be holding an afternoon of 'Music in the Garden', at 18, Hare Lane, Claygate, KT109BS on the afternoon of Sunday 28th of June, from 2.30pm to 6.00pm. Tickets are £5 on the day. There will be a plant stall, and tea, cakes, wine and local craft beer available. I will also be running in the Claygate 5 cross-country on Sunday 5th July. I'll be aiming for a time of less than 45minutes. Maybe you could sponsor that challenge!
