With my husband Philip, we are Trustees of Project Dukem, raising money to feed HIV/Aids orphans in Ethiopia, we also help other needy people in Lalibela in the north of Ethiopia. We visited Ethiopia ion 2006 and were amazed by the lovely country and the beautiful and friendly people but appalled by the abject poverty which we saw. After our first visit we started helping Makonen and Dagnachew by funding their final two terms at High School, paying for the rent on their mud hut in Lalibela and then supported Mekonen at college where he learnt the Ladies Garment Trade. After his two years at college we funded a sewing machine and bought materials so that he could start his own business. We still give him an annual allowance and he has recently supported his sister Serkalem whilst she attended High School. We have now funded her entry into college in Bahar Dar. We have also provided electricity for Kebebush in order that she can make bread to sell and thereby support herself.
We fund the feeding programme for a small school in Dukem, 35 km from Addis Ababa. We first visited this school in 2007. A school without even chalk with which to write on the blackboard. Our aim is to feed the 120 or so children each school day of the year. This encourages them to attend school from 4 to 9 years of age and then go onto government school. If they complete their education until the age of 14 there are jobs available and they will break the cycle of poverty in which they live.
To raise money I give fund raising illustrated talks to various clubs and groups and also school assemblies.
