My challenge is to run my first ultra-marathon of the Cornish south-west peninsula from St Ives to Chapel Porth beach, covering some of the toughest and remotest coastal path on the south-west Cornish peninsula. A total ascent of 1509m (4950 feet) - 1.5 times the height of Snowdon!
I am part of a relay team of four (including my best friend Milly Durrant!) completing the Ultra Trail South West Golden Hammer Challenge - a 100 mile relay from Porthleven to Watergate Bay. I expect to take charge of our hammer at 9am on Saturday 23 June, after Nick and Tom have done their night stint, and hand over to Milly for our final leg within in 5 hours by 2pm.
I am raising money for The Alzheimer's Society - a care and research charity for people with this disease and other dementias, their families and carers. My grandma recently passed away having suffered from the terrible disease and every penny towards research counts. I will also donate to the Wirral and Cheshire RSPCA - a self-financing independent branch of the RSPCA that receive very little funding, and where I was lucky enough to get my rescue cats, Mr Scoresby and Lyra, from a couple of years ago. Please donate generously.
I have only recently discovered the joys of coastal trail running having run the Classic Quarter half marathon (13 miles) last year. But I now have to complete my first ever ultra-marathon and what better place to complete this than along "the longest and most deserted stretch of coast on the whole South West Coast Path" (as quoted in the SWCP Guide)!
I only have 8 weeks to prepare myself for this monumental challenge. Please demonstrate your support by donating whatever you can afford - I will be concentrating on the good my fundraising will do, as I hit my pain barriers throughout the torturous experience!
