Launched in 2014 to support and champion social mobility, the Debrett’s Foundation is a not-for-profit division of Debrett’s. Specifically targeting state secondary schools across England, but outside of London, where 30% or more of the student body are eligible for Free School Meals, the Foundation invites teachers to nominate their most academically talented sixth-form students to attend a day of soft skills training.

The Paired Peers study – led by researchers at Bristol University and the University of the West of England – found that wealthier students were ‘far more able to draw upon family resources and had access to influential social networks’ to help get work experience or internships during their degree. It has been widely acknowledged through the work of the Social Mobility Commission that family background, geography and schooling can have an adverse impact on the university and career prospects of the less privileged.

Through training in interview, networking and CV writing skills as well as establishing a network of mentors who can continue to offer advice and potentially help open doors to work experience or internships, the Debrett's Foundation strives to address this disparity and work to ensure that the next generation of leaders are from all walks of life and backgrounds, and to help them become the people of tomorrow.

Costs for this, per student, are not high:

  • £10 provides a student with essential training material in a keepsake hardback book to which they can refer in the future.
  • £50 buys lunch for 10 students during their training day.
  • £1,000 covers the entire cost of a day's training including booking an appropriate training space for the group.

With an average of 10 students attending each training day, the costs break down to just £100 per person.

The Debrett's Foundation aspires to continue welcoming our target of 100 students each academic year to training and wants to increase the level of support for each student by being able to subsidise travel costs. Return tickets between northern cities such as Leeds and London can cost in excess of £150. This cost, unsurprisingly, can be prohibitive, and sadly causes some schools and individual students to withdraw from training. An additional £1,500 per training day would allow us to support when travel costs are a limiting factor.
