Grand Opening of the Outdoor Play Pavilion

Date Posted: 17 Jun 2013

The Candlelighters Outdoor Play Pavilion was officially opened by representatives of Leeds Fans Remembrance and Alfie Connor's Family on Thursday 13 June during a special Mad Hatter's themed Tea Party, which was attended by senior NHS representatives, key supporters of the charity and families whose child is currently undergoing treatment for cancer.

Guests enjoyed mad hatters, cup cakes, wonderful sweeties and lots of fun. They were also entertained by our famous Barrington children's entertainer, wowed by a fabulous bubble machine (kindly donated by Izi - Leeds student) and watched a time lapse film of the building and play area.

The Play Pavilion has been designed to support children, and their families, whilst receiving sometimes lengthy treatment on the wards and will enable families to step outside the hospital for a much needed breath of fresh air and to play and relax without the hospital environment.

We would like to sincerely thank everyone who has helped to raise the £300,000 needed for the project and significant funders included the Leeds Fans Remembrance Group and Alfie Connor and his family and friends, Alfie is currently undergoing treatment for cancer and is being supported by Candlelighters.

The Play Pavilion has been built by York based company Simpson's (York) Ltd to the highest specifications and has received a certificate for its green credentials, which include solar panels.

Jo Shepheard, operations manager at Candlelighters commented;

"We are delighted with the Play Pavilion and it's just what families need, it's taken a huge amount of effort from all our families who have fundraised for us and we are so pleased with the results. We are delighted that it is a unique building for our children to enjoy for many years to come"

About Candlelighters

When a child is diagnosed with cancer, lives are turned upsidedown in an instant, not just for the child but for parents, siblings, family and friends. Helping and supporting those children and their families throughout their journey is why Candlelighters was formed more than 40 years ago and it is why they are still here today.
