Knit items to sell in aid of The Big Issue Foundation
This year is our fourth annual Big Knitathon! Whether you have been with us from the start or this is will be your first event, join in to help us raise some funds from crafting to support Big Issue vendors!
Over the last three years over 2000 knitters have got their needles out for the Big Knitathon and raised over £22,500 to support The Big Issue Foundation’s work. Joining in is easy, whether you’ve been knitting for years or just picked up your needles, you can take part in an event in your area or hold your own. In fact you don’t even need to knit! If you’d rather host a crochet, cross stitch or paper craft-athon then feel free!
The Big Knitathon is all about getting together with friends, neighbours or colleagues, old and new, to knit or craft small items for other people. You can hold your event wherever you like, last year Big Issue vendor Sam hosted her on the street in Covent Garden. And you can knit or make whatever you like, or whatever you think other people will buy! Thanks to our friends at Hobbycraftand Search Press we have a few great patterns for you and your group to try!
We’d love you and your friends to be a part of this year’s Knitathon fun and fundraising this November! You may decide to get sponsored for the length of time you will be knitting, you could hold a craft sale or raffle of items you have made, or you could take orders for individual knitted items from friends and colleagues. However you fundraise at your Big Knitathon you’ll be helping to make a big difference to the lives of Big Issue vendors across the country.
The Big Issue works with vendors like Mick from across the country, and each positive step our vendors take costs just £150 of our support. Last year the charity supported over 2,200 vendors to make 5,800 positive steps forwards; the funds from The Big Knitathon made a great contribution to that.
Knitting is so much more fun when you get together in a group, so this year we have teamed up with Streetlife, a social network for local communities, to make getting your group together even easier. It’s free and easy to sign up and start a conversation on Streetlife to find knitters in your neighbourhood and invite them along to your event!
When you register to hold a Knitathon we’ll send you great knitting patterns, some balloons to decorate your event, a collection box and loads more! When you register we can add you to our map if you like so that you can get your neighbours involved too!
